COLLEGE MOVE-IN CHECKLIST

Move-in day is four hours of hauling boxes up a stairwell with two thousand other families doing the same thing. Everything you decide in advance is time you get back.

Four weeks out

  • Confirm hall, room number and move-in time slot
  • Ask housing about bed size, fridge limits and wall-hanging rules
  • Message your roommate about who brings the shared items
  • Order bedding, laundry and bathroom items
  • Book any move-in services while dates are still open

One week out

  • Pack by category, not by room, and label every box
  • Pack a first-night bag: bedding, towel, toiletries, chargers, medication
  • Print or save housing check-in paperwork
  • Confirm parking and unloading rules for move-in day

Doing this in the wrong order is why families are still unpacking at 9pm.

  • Check in and get keys or card access first
  • Photograph the room's existing condition before anything goes in
  • Clean the room before unpacking, not after
  • Loft or adjust the bed before furniture placement
  • Make the bed, then unpack clothes, then everything else

First week on campus

  • Find the nearest laundry room and note the busy hours
  • Set a standing weekly reset time, thirty minutes is enough
  • Agree on roommate rules for trash, guests and quiet hours
  • Locate the mail room, health center and hall staff office

Should you clean a dorm room before move-in?

Yes. Rooms are turned over quickly between residents and summer conference use. Cleaning before boxes are opened is far easier than cleaning around a fully unpacked room.

What should parents do on move-in day?

Handle logistics your student cannot: parking, check-in paperwork, cleaning, bed height and the runs for whatever the room turned out to need. Then leave before the awkward hovering starts.

How early should you book move-in help?

As soon as the move-in date is confirmed. Every family on campus is working within the same two-day window.
